Living the Preventative Lifestyle

It is common for many patients to contact a Chiropractor when they are in pain perhaps after an injury or an automobile accident. With minor aches and pains, patients are likely to see a significant reduction in symptoms after one adjustment which often makes them think the problem is solved and they do not need to come back. There is a saying chiropractors often use and it goes, “Pain is the last thing to show up and the first thing to go away.” Basically there may be dysfunction in your body long before you know about it. Pain is generally an indicator of an acute injury or a problem that has gone on way too long. A Chiropractor’s job is to restore function to your body not to alleviate pain. The goal is to keep your body functioning so that you do not get to a point where the pain is so overwhelming that it effects your quality of life.

Anyone that has ever tried to lose weight knows that one day of healthy eating will serve no long term benefits. In order to lose weight, one must change their lifestyle which includes exercise and healthy eating daily. Chiropractic care is much the same way. One adjustment may provide relief for your specific complaint, but it likely won’t serve you long term. Regular check ups whether it be monthly or weekly, can help insure that your body is functioning properly. People don’t just get sick, their immune system is broken down over time due to stress, lack of sleep, or a poor diet. The culmination of all this on our bodies over possibly months at a time leads to sickness. Health can be achieved much the same way. If you take care of yourself by living a healthy and preventative lifestyle, you can avoid sickness, pain and disease instead of dealing with it when it arrives.

If your Chiropractor asks you to return for a visit it is likely because he or she knows that based on your injury or complaint, healing properly will take more than one adjustment. Unlike most health care which treats symptoms once they arise, the main goal of Chiropractic care is to prevent symptoms from coming in the first place. We do not like to see people when they are in pain, we want to prevent that from happening altogether. Inevitably life will cause accidents and sickness to occur, and a Chiropractor is pleased to get you back on the path to health.  Injuries or prolonged dysfunction are much harder to correct as muscles and tendons are often damaged. In order to stabilize the bones and keep the nervous system functioning properly, more than one adjustment may be necessary. Handling your health in a preventative manner is much cheaper and more effective in the long run.

Some Raw Recipes

Posted on

We are currently in the process of trying to incorporate more of a raw diet into our lives as you might have read about in our last post. The goal of course is to promote health and wellness by filling our bodies with what it was designed for and with materials it can fully absorb and break down. The best way to do that is to eat raw fruits, vegetables and some nuts. We are working our way towards completely raw but at this point our goal is somewhere between 50-75% raw food. Most people’s palettes are adapted to high fat, high calorie foods that are packed with flavor. A lot of our satisfaction from food comes from how things taste and so adapting to a raw diet will take time. You may likely find fresh foods to be bland or may not like the taste at all. However over time, your taste buds will get used to the subtle flavors in fruits and veggies and learn to love them. The best way to add flavor is to use fresh herbs. We are eating a lot of salads and in order to pack them with flavor and make them a little unique each day, I have been creating some of my own dressings. The dressings are made almost entirely of raw foods as well and can be made fat free if you desire. Vinegar is a staple in most salad dressings but it is extremely acidic so try to avoid it. A great substitution is citrus juice, my favorite being lime. All you need to make fresh dressings are an array of fruits, veggies and fresh herbs, a food processor or blender, and an imagination. Here are a few I have made this week:

Spicy Avocado Dressing

  • 1 avocado
  • handful of fresh cilantro
  • lime juice
  • half raw red pepper
  • jalapeno (I used about half but you can use more or less depending on the spiciness you desire)
  • clove of garlic
  • Handful of grapes (Weird right? The grapes add a touch of sweetness and help balance the spiciness of the jalapeno)
  • A little bit of olive oil and sea salt and pepper to taste
  • Throw it all in a blender/food processor and puree til creamy
  • The avocado gives this dressing a creamy texture reminiscent of ranch minus all the calories. It’s packed with flavor and you will love it!

Strawberry Pepper Dressing

  • Half of a red pepper
  • Handful of Strawberries or more if you want a sweeter dressing
  • Lime juice
  • Handful of fresh oregano and basil (you can use any herbs you desire. Mint would be good too)
  • A bit of olive oil and salt and pepper. (Again you can omit the olive oil if you want to avoid the fat. I just add it to help blend everything together. You could use water.)
  • Blend it up and pour over salad.

Like I said, if you use a little creativity you can make a new dressing each night. The mix of flavors satisfies the palette and makes eating tons of salad much more enjoyable. Mix up the ingredients you put in your salads for some excitement. Try things you wouldn’t expect in salads like pieces of fruit, chopped asparagus, or corn. Of course you don’t have to eat only salad, we made a semi-raw soup last night.

Beet and Squash Soup:

  • Chop up ingredients and put in a food processor RAW. (You will need a high-powered blender or food processor to chop up these hard root veggies. If you don’t have that you may need to lightly cook them first.)
  • 3 Beets
  • 1 Sweet Potato
  • Half of a butternut squash
  • Half of an onion
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • Coconut milk
  • Veggie Broth
  • Cinnamon, salt and pepper
  • Fresh oregano
  • Once it was all blended up, I poured it in a pot and put it on the stove just long enough to warm it. Cooking destroys many of the valuable nutrients in food so avoid frying, sauteing or over cooking. I didn’t put portions on everything because I didn’t actually measure. You can adapt the recipe depending on the portion size you want to make or the texture you desire. Mine made enough for about 6 servings.

If I come up with any other tasty options, I’ll be sure to share! Do you have any favorite raw recipes?

The Importance of an Alkaline Diet

Posted on

If you take yourself back to high school biology you likely learned about a little thing known as homeostasis. It is the body’s ability to maintain balance in response to all of the impacts of daily life. For example, your temperature stays pretty stable around 98.6 degrees regardless of whether you are standing outside in a snow storm or laying out at the beach. If your body is out of balance, that is likely when you start to feel sick or fatigued. Homeostasis also works to maintain the pH of our blood which is slightly alkaline at 7.365 pH. An alkaline state means your blood can absorb more oxygen. The opposite of alkaline is acidic and an acidic environment can be hazardous to your health. If your body is unable to absorb enough oxygen, you can get sick which can involve something as simple as gaining weight and feeling tired to more severe conditions like cancer and heart disease. Americans in general tend to be too acidic. We become acidic due to stress, toxins, and of course the food we eat. An acidic state makes it easier for bad cells to thrive and it eats away at our body causing inflammation and various other problems. Many people who start eating a more alkaline diet experience significant weight loss, not just because they are eating better foods but because those foods reduce the acidity and thus the inflammation. Your body metabolizes food into either an alkaline or an acid. Food that may be acidic like an orange, actually metabolizes into an alkaline in your body. You will likely experience more energy, a boosted immune system and a sense of clarity if you incorporate enough alkaline foods into your diet to create an alkaline state.

Here is a list of common acidic foods:

  • Junk & Processed foods
  • Sugar
  • Coffee & Tea (black)
  • All animal food (meat, eggs, chicken, fish, lobster, oysters)
  • Grains: (white) wheat, rice, pasta, flour, bread etc
  • Dairy products (milk, cheese, butter)
  • Peanuts, cashews

Here is a list of some alkaline foods:

  • Raw Vegetables – especially green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale)
  • Fresh Herbs & Spice – parsley, basil, cilantro, cayenne, ginger
  • Fruits – watermelon, avocado, cucumber, cantaloupe
  • Wheat grass
  • Sprouts: i.e. alfalfa, mung bean, broccoli etc.
  • Raisins
  • Dried Figs
  • Kelp and other sea greens
  • Berries: blue berries, strawberries

Generally raw fruits and vegetables are your best bet. Cooking destroys many of the nutrients in food and may change your body’s ability to metabolize it properly. Some say that juicing can help speed up the process of converting your body to an alkaline state. Water is often acidic despite most people’s thoughts that it is neutral. Try buying an alkaline water like Essentia (available at most health food stores). While it may be difficult to incorporate only alkaline foods into your diet, the health benefits can be substantial especially if you are in a diseased state. Any effort to create an alkaline state will be beneficial. Remember that stress plays a big role in creating an acidic state so try to find ways to reduce stress like yoga or other forms of activity. Toxins are harmful for our bodies as well and we recommend organic foods when possible. Organic foods are especially important if you are consuming the whole fruit like a strawberry and less important if there is a peal like a banana or avocado. Instead of making drastic changes to your diet that will never last, try adding more fresh foods initially and once you get used to eating them as snacks or with meals you can begin to eliminate unhealthy items from your diet. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself and try to have fun with it. Eating healthy is a process and in order to sustain it, you need to have realistic goals. Like any change in your life, diet requires a big adjustment. Food often satisfies more than just hunger and you will likely miss that emotional state of fullness you get after a delicious comfort food meal. Your body and taste buds will adapt though and thank you for it eventually! Remember, eating a more alkaline diet doesn’t mean you can never eat ice cream again, it just means you should try to limit your intake for the sake of your health. Cheating is completely acceptable and encouraged! Being overly strict with your diet makes it stressful and frustrating. However you are likely to find that once you start eating healthy items more regularly, your cravings for processed foods will diminish and they may not even sound as good to you anymore. I used to drink a lot of soda and now I don’t even miss it.

There is a common misconception that buying fresh food is more expensive than buying packaged, processed foods. We have found that eliminating processed foods (chips, frozen food, cheese, soda) from our list has actually reduced our grocery bill. Part of this may be because processed and junk foods do not satisfy our body despite “filling” us up initially. The result is that we are often hungry shortly after we eat and want to snack constantly. If your body gets all the nutrients it needs from a meal, you are less likely to feel hungry later. Another plus is that you can eat as much raw food as you want without feeling guilty! An additional option would be to grow some of the items yourself for further savings. Fresh herbs and tomatoes grow easily even if you don’t have a green thumb and its a fun project for kids!

Chiropractic Care- A True Health Insurance Policy

Posted on

Assuming you are paying at least a small amount of attention to the news lately, you have likely heard of the debate over health care and the current effort to reform the system. However what is being called health care reform is really more accurately insurance reform. The bill has little to do with actual health care. The effort to fix the insurance issues neglects the fact that insurance companies in general are a huge part of the problem. Insurance companies drive up the cost of health care for individuals as many people generally have no idea what procedures actually cost and they don’t care as long as their insurance covers it. In my personal experience, doctors are much more conservative with my care when they knew I was not insured and conversely much more willing to suggest certain procedures when they knew I was insured. I was often told the actual cost of procedures and medications when I was not insured in order to make a decision but never was given that information when I wasn’t paying for it out of my pocket. During times when I did not have health insurance I turned down many suggested procedures that had no negative impact whatsoever on my care or health. Insurance companies do not generally support preventative care as they do with what I call “treatment care”. Chiropractic care falls into the category of preventative care. They do not feel chiropractic care is medically necessary when there are no complaints and often times even if there are complaints. However preventative care could save this country big bucks if it was supported. As you know, it is much easier to brush your teeth each day and go to the dentist for regular cleanings instead of avoiding both and ending up there for a root canal or tooth extraction. Chiropractic care functions much the same way. It is maintenance for your body to help prevent more serious and costly issues from arising in the future. What we call health care in this country is in reality sickness care. Which is why people who do not understand chiropractic care have a hard time with the idea of going to the doctor when they are feeling fine. While chiropractors can be of assistance during sickness or after an injury, the true goal is to prevent disease before it occurs. Your health insurance does nothing to guarantee your health but rather is available once you get sick. If you don’t get sick, it is after all unnecessary. Most of us rely on it in case of emergency and I don’t denounce the importance of that.

However, it is time that we as a country become educated on the importance of preventative methods of health care (diet, exercise, stress reduction, and chiropractic care to name a few) and start actively making our health a priority. While even the best preventative methods are not a guarantee of optimum health, they certainly are worth a try. Many people cringe at the thought of paying for a chiropractic adjustment when they are feeling good or even a nutritional supplement but don’t think twice at spending the same or more on a haircut, a game of golf, or a night out to dinner. True insurance involves taking steps to prevent illness, pain, and disease in the first place. Your body is an amazing piece of machinery designed to take care of itself. However you are responsible for putting good things inside, drinking plenty of water, avoiding dangerous or risky situations, and managing your weight to name a few. A chiropractor can take your efforts a step further by finding and removing nerve interference so that everything functions normally in your body. Give preventative care a try, you won’t be upset that you don’t get to use your health insurance in the future!

A Chiropractic Analogy

I was in visiting my chiropractor this week. I’ve been under his care since I was a young child and he played a significant role in my decision to become a chiropractor. I continue to be grateful for his wisdom and support. Anyway, while in his office waiting to get adjusted, I was listening to his discussion with what sounded like a new patient. He was educating the patient on the importance of preventative care and regular visits to the chiropractor. He explained that the gentleman had some big problems that would not be solved by one adjustment. He then pointed down to his own belly which has expanded since his Rugby days in school. He said this is my problem and it is not going away if I just exercise once or eat healthy when I feel like it. He said it would take regular work to solve his “problem” and even once it was solved, he would have to continue to work to keep the belly at bay. I’ve heard several analogies as to the importance of regular chiropractic care but nothing as simple and applicable as this example. It made sense, the patient got it, and everyone got a little laugh out of it. Chiropractic care is very much like exercise and healthy eating which are also a preventative forms of health care. If you want to live a healthy lifestyle, maintain a healthy weight, and be in peak physical shape, you have to commit to regular effort. Of course exercise and healthy eating should happen daily and the vast majority of people will not need to visit their chiropractor daily. However the overall principle is the same. If you want to achieve and maintain health, you have to insure that your nervous system is functioning properly. No one is better able to determine that than a chiropractor. You don’t just start exercising because you are overweight, you exercise to prevent it. Don’t just go to the chiropractor because you are in pain or are suffering from symptoms, go regularly to prevent all that in the first place. Regularly can be once a week, once a month, or once every few months depending on your lifestyle and health concerns. Your doctor will be able to provide you with a specific care plan that fits your need and insures you are receiving the best possible health care for you.

Chiropractic and Headaches

Sure, we’ve all had one, they come and they go, and generally we just accept them as a part of life. However the fact of the matter is, headaches are not normal especially if they are severe or recurring. Headaches can be caused by a vast array of situations from stress to dehydration to simply sleeping wrong. Many people simply pop a pain reliever in their mouth and continue on with their day, however there may be an underlining cause that can not be alleviated through the use of pain relievers. If you suffer from regular headaches, more than once a week, it may be because of a misalignment in your spine. The cervical region, more commonly referred to as the neck, is often the source of headaches. From sleeping wrong, to sitting at a computer all day, or an array of injuries, the bones in the neck can get out of place causing tension in the muscles. This pull on the muscles can result in whats commonly called a tension headache or a headache in general. When the bones in the neck are out of alignment there is also pressure on the nerves which can cause pain as well. A chiropractor can test for subluxation or misalignment of the bones and adjust them back into place. Many times this immediately alleviates tension and provides headache relief. Because we move our necks often, don’t generally use proper posture, and rarely sleep in good form, our necks are vulnerable to subluxation. Visiting the chiropractor regularly can help insure that headaches stay at bay. Headaches can also be a symptom of more severe situations so if you do not find relief, a chiropractor may refer you out for further testing. Don’t ignore your headaches or think of them as normal. If you suffer from headaches often, it may be helpful to track what you were doing when you got it and what time of day it was. This may help pinpoint the source or rule out some options as well. Be sure to tell your chiropractor about any headaches you are having even if you consider them to be minor.

A Chiropractic Education

It is a common misconception that Chiropractor’s do not receive as much education as a medical doctor. Chiropractor’s aren’t just given the title of Doctor, they have earned it. At Palmer, where Dr. Kyle graduated from, students are enrolled for 3 and a third years. The school year is all year round and is broken down into trimesters making it equivalent to a 5 year program in traditional curricular models. A student on a full load can take as many as 35 credit hours in one trimester for a total of nearly 4,500 classroom hours by graduation. Much like medical doctors, Doctors of Chiropractic take classes in anatomy, physiology, psychology, obstetrics, and pediatrics to name a few. Because Doctors of Chiropractic rely on natural methods to help their patients, the ability to diagnose properly is crucial. Therefore Chiropractors actually take double to triple  the credit hours in diagnosis, neurology, and x-ray than do medical doctors. The major differences in the curriculum between the two fields are the areas of specialty that the other does not perform. For example Spinal Adjustments and manipulation for Chiropractors and pharmacology and general surgery for medical doctors. In addition to their formal education, many students take elective courses, certification courses, and apply for diplomate programs. Students also spend over one third of their education in a clinic setting where they gain experience diagnosing and treating patients. All Chiropractors are required to pass 4 rigorous National Board Exams and comply with the regulations of the state they are practicing in. Some states have their own board exams.  Chiropractors are often referred to as alternative health care providers but in reality they can function as a general practitioner for all of your health care needs. Chiropractors are well trained in their limitations and scopes of practices and will gladly refer their patients out for situations that they can not help with. While a Chiropractor can not prescribe drugs, they can suggest other natural remedies and treatments that may be just as effective or more so than traditional remedies. Be assured that your Chiropractor has a proper education and the full ability to help with various health conditions and situations.

Spinal Anatomy 101

Ah yes, the Spine. The epicenter of the human body, life’s shield of armor and the crux of chiropractic care. For such an important body part, what do you really know about the spine? Perhaps you don’t care to know, but just in case here are some facts. The spine is composed of 33 bones, called vertebrae, in 4 different regions. The cervical region, or more commonly called the neck, is composed of 7 bones. The top two bones which allow you to turn your head are referred to as the atlas and axis. Atlas, after the mythological figure who held up the world. Much like him, the Atlas is responsible for holding up your head. If you reach around your back, at the base of your neck you will feel a protruding bone. That is C-7 or the Vertebral prominens, well for most people anyway. For about 30% of people, the Vertebral Prominens is C-6 or T1. Anyway its a landmark your doctor will use when taking x-rays or to help count vertebrae. The Thoracic region is composed of 12 bones starting at the base of your neck and heading to about mid back. Your ribs are attached to your thoracic vertebrae. Then comes the lumbar region or low back. The lumbar region absorbs a lot of the stress of daily activities and thus low back pain is a common complaint among patients. Last but not least is the Sacral region made up of the sacrum and coccyx. At one point in your life, these were separate bones however over time the pressure from standing, walking, and other life activities caused the bones to fuse together. Don’t worry, its a good thing! The spine has natural curves which are emphasized through daily life. Your cervical spine and lumbar spine have lordotic curves and the thoracic region has a kyphotic curve. This allows you to hold up your head, balance, and absorb the stress of movement properly. Too much or too little of a curve can result in pain and major health issues like a hunch back. Scoliosis results when the spine curves sideways. Between each vertebra is a disc which acts as a shock absorber.

So there you have it, that is the Spine in a nutshell. Maybe more than you wanted to know but at least when your doctor refers to certain things you will know exactly what he/she is talking about! Stay tuned for the pop quiz!
